Singapore: The Garden City

Updated: Jan 16, 2020

One of Singapore’s nicknames is The Garden City and it is well deserved.

On our first day in Singapore, as we were walking the streets with William on our food tour, we noticed many small gardens planted around the business and commercial buildings and a variety of sculptures that were part of the landscape.

Some of the sculptures were a little bizarre….

On our second day in Singapore, we hired a taxi to take us to the Botanical Gardens. Along the way, we drove down one tree-lined boulevard after another.

My impression was that Singapore is not so much a city with lots of gardens, but rather one large garden with some tall buildings growing in it. It was often difficult to get photos of the interesting architecture of the city due to so many trees in the way.

The Botanical Gardens are spectacular and we only saw a small fraction of them. The walkways were shaded by huge trees, trellises and arches, and passed by cool ponds and waterfalls.

I was so happy that our taxi happened to drop us off near the Orchid Garden -- what a special treat!

Anyone who has been to my house knows how much I love orchids. Also, many of you know how much we love crab, living in Dungeness crab territory. After gorging on orchids, we went in search of the famous dish -- Singapore Chilli Crab. We made this once at home from a recipe shared by our friend and chef mentor, Robert Fong. It was delicious but we wanted to compare it to the real thing. We found a highly recommended restaurant right near the Botanical Gardens -- the Jumbo Restaurant. Here is me getting ready to dig in.

It was a messy business but we were up to the task.

Next time, we’ll take a package of wet wipes with us though.

The following day, we flew to Medan, the main city on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. So much to tell you about our time in Indonesia.
